Concept Maps

Creating a Long-term Vision

The concept map illustrates potential changes to land and building use, ecology and open spaces, transportation, and parking, among other topics. This is just one possible scenario based on the current needs of the campus and community.

This is a long-range plan, with flexibility to adapt to the changing needs of the university and community over the next 30 years.

Any development envisioned throughout the planning process and in the final plan will first require and be preceded by the identification of, and in some cases, the development of new, appropriate spaces for existing facility uses and parking.

Design Principles

Spark Discovery

By enhancing critical mass of research and innovation in close proximity to one another.

Transportation and Mobility

Essential elements to developing a modern and accessible district.

Embrace Cultural and Historical Significance

Invest in our area’s rich and complex history, in particular acknowledging the ties to the original Native Nations land, Teejop.

Create a Sense of Place

Providing a mix of uses to foster connection and a welcoming campus environment.

Enhance the Natural Environment

Creating open spaces and connections to Lake Mendota.

Prioritize Walkability

Strengthen the pedestrian network and create a network of close destinations.

Phase 3

Plan and relocate McClimon Track and Soccer complex on campus. Add research office, lab and collaborative space; parking; and residential space.

Phase 4

Replace Lot 60 with a new Track/Soccer complex. Add residential and hotel space. This is a concept for the track, as the campus continues to look for other opportunities.

This shows all previous phases plus adding additional hotel (orange) and residential space (yellow) along the Mendota lakefront.
