UWPD Updates Access Control System

It seems simple enough: you take out your Wiscard, scan it at the door, and make your way into work.
It’s easy to not think about the complicated behind-the-scenes work that goes into making this daily task so simple for all of us. And for the last four years, the Access Control team at UWPD has been revamping and replacing the entire campus-wide access control system.
Phase One, which is slated to be completed by October 2023, replaces the backbone of the previous decades old system. This more robust, state-of-the-art access platform uses best practices for higher education and features the latest technology that will take campus well into the future.

“I’m really proud of the work our UWPD team has put into this massive project,” said Lt. Jeff Ellis. “This has truly been a team effort and a monumental task. Our team has consistently exceeded expectations, kept the project on time, and has kept stakeholders, building managers, and campus partners informed and involved.”

Phase Two of the access control project is scheduled to start in late 2023, which involves replacing the 5,000+ card readers on campus. This phase adds additional security to the readers and will allow campus to use latest technologies, like mobile card reading.
